Listening Habits
I keep coming back to this album. Different lines and melodies stand out to me whenever I revisit it. It’s funny because I detested the first single, Who Says, and it took a while for the rest of the album to grow on me.
These songs are just so well crafted. The melodies are a bit haunting. The lyrics are exactly what you wished you could have said in the heat of the moment, in those desperate arguments trying to just be heard and understood by your partner.
Edge of Desire is by far my favorite song. It pretty much describes the searching and wanting I felt throughout my twenties. The idea of “Don’t say a word, just come over and lie here with me…” pretty much describes the pivotal relationship of my mid-twenties. The two years spent just trying to make someone love me, no matter the emotional or psychological cost. It’s sad and beautiful all at the same time.
I think I’ll always be a John Mayer fan. He has evolved and matured but still managed to maintain a pop sensibility. I think it’s wonderful that he is able to bring a bit of quality music into the mainstream that is flooded with artists that are more about branding and entertainment and not so much about the art of music.
